Message from the Editor:

Thursday this week will be April 1st, traditionally April Fool's Day - an obscure holiday from medieval Europe which was only perpetuated into modern times because it gave journalists the excuse to play the fool. In its heyday, there were some classic April spoofs: the BBC's spaghetti harvesting festival; the panic-sowing War of the World's radio broadcast by Orson Welles, the left-handed burger and the time update of Big Ben.

Locally, some of the more successful stories involved an introduction of time zones in South Africa that would cut towns and houses in half; when Sol Kerzner bought Table Mountain as a site for a casino; and Pick and Pay who created an app that allowed customers to sample Hot Cross Buns online.

Sadly, April Fool's Day has become irrelevant with the rise of fake news - a universal caveat emptor - that makes almost every day an April Fool's Day. And April Fool 2020 was cancelled as both the genuine news and the fake news was too grim to lampoon.

It is unlikely that April Fool will survive the latest challenges to the information landscape, which is perhaps not a bad thing. It is time we moved on. But it is still a pity that we no longer have a society that gives an embarrassed and good-natured grin when they find that the joke was on them.

Here at the Chronicle, we have genuine stories, useful advice, and bona fide insights. Enjoy.
