Safrea Chronicle
Message from the editor:

What with Omicrom ripping through our land, seismic surveys blasting our exquisite, biodiverse-rich Wild Coast, trucks blockading the N3 at Van Reenen's Pass, ongoing jaw-dropping statements at the SAHRC hearings into the July 'unrest', and Eskom back to its load shedding tricks it seems our world has gone to pot. Now that's an interesting phrase. Looking into its origin, I found that it was first used in a more literal way in the 16th century to refer to meat that had been cut up and was ready to be cooked. It's thus quite pertinent for those of us who are in a stew nowadays.

'Pot' is a rather versatile term used to refer to, inter alia, saucepans, plant containers, and a well known weed, itself a euphemism for marijuana, aka dagga, aka ganja, aka cannabis, whose oil is said to have healing properties, which was the subject of a document I've been editing this week. It puzzled me why cannabis is euphemistically called pot so I looked into that too and found that, like the term 'marijuana', 'pot' has Spanish roots and is an abbreviation of 'potaguaya', a contraction of potacion de guaya, which is wine or brandy steeped with cannabis buds. That sounds like something the doctor ordered.

Also something the doctor ordered are vaccines, which are the subject of two features this week. Soil is another substance the doctor ordered and you can read about that in Delilah Nosworthy's article on probiotics. Seismic surveys off the Wild Coast are contemplated in a feature on Humpback whales, and further information about the Kruger millions suggests that the July 2021 looters were pursuing an age-old South African habit. And, as balm to the soul, there are three thought-provoking poetry features.

We hope you enjoy this bumper edition of the Chronicle.

Covid-19 vaccine inequity: when Africa sneezes, the world sneezes too!

Author: Buhle Ndweni

The highly transmissible Covid-19 omicron variant that was recently detected in South Africa was a result of vaccine inequity. Fighting the pandemic as a collective through global Covid-19 vaccination rollout programmes that are inclusive of low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) is part of the solution, writes Buhle Ndweni, Independent Health Economist.

Can probiotics prevent acid reflux?

Author: Delilah Nosworthy

Believe it or not, the best way to maintain an adequate supply of bacteria in your gut is by eating soil. Regular consumption of soil-based organisms (SBOs) is needed to restore your gut ecosystem. These SBOs include the good bacteria (probiotics) that usually live in dirt. They provide our gut with the support it needs to stay healthy by aiding in digestion, food assimilation, and proper nutrient absorption.

Oerknal

Ons praat van 'The Universe' en ons verwys na 'Moeder Aarde' en ek wonder maar net waarom ons so halsstarrig weier om die Skepper van alles erkenning te gee? OERKNAL Jy sê vir my daar was ’n oerknal, gevolg deur evolusie? Jy wil weet hoe ek kan glo dat ’n Lewende Wese op ’n dag met ‘n bulderende stem uit …
