Message from the Editor:

This weekend brought the sad news that the great Wilbur Smith has passed away. What a rich literary legacy he leaves - forty-nine books that have thrilled hundreds of millions of readers worldwide. When the Lion Feeds, his debut novel featuring the Courtney family, is surely one of the most unforgettable South African novels ever. The Anglo-Zulu War; the gold rush; diamonds and dust; the thrill of the wild; gripping adventure; the rawness and untamed beauty of Africa; the call of Africa – it’s all there. So much so that a friend of mine responded to that call. A famous lepidopterist, Steve, who emigrated from the UK to SA decades ago and has contributed immeasurably to the knowledge of southern African butterflies, credits that book for changing his life. “When the Lion Feeds is one of those iconic African stories, along with a few others, that got me out here,” he says.

Such is the power of writing.

RIP Wilbur Smith and thank you for the wonderful stories.
