Time Off: What we will be watching this week:
Back to Dandy Scandies: we have gone over the hump of winter, but it will still be cold for a long time to come. To remind us what real winter is all about, take in some of the Scandinavian noir on offer in the form of Wisting, a dark and humourless but nevertheless riveting drama about the titular hero and his search (as always) for a ruthless serial killer. It is the most expensive Norwegian drama ever produced, with an eye on an international viewership with the inclusion of an FBI agent and a bilingual soundtrack. Glossy production, gloomy visuals, conflicted characters, intelligent script, lots of snow... it will entertain while making you appreciate our sunny skies even more.

The Afrikaner Volkstaat - dream or pipe-dream?
Former president FW de Klerk withdrew this week from a virtual US debate, after a 'vitriolic reaction' to his presence from a number of civil rights groups.
There is perhaps an irony in the fact that most of these groups campaign for their voices to be heard, which they seemingly aim to achieve by shutting down the voices of others.
A certain portion of the Afrikaner community in South Africa, especially, feel aggrieved. They have tried to communicate their concerns, with no success. Now they believe that unification is a sham, and they want to join a global trend towards societal devolution.

Afrikaans is a rich and lively language, but often hilariously abused in our multi-cultural country. Here is a wry and self-deprecating look at a misunderstanding brought about by a common tongue....

More important things in writing than flawless grammar?
And speaking of matters grammatical, even the same language can separate us. Some people might think that proper English is a matter of life and death. Others might think it is more important than that. Tiffany Markman contributes her opinion.
