Two people died this last week. And they could not have had two more different lives, deaths, or legacies.
Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, died peacefully at home a little short of his centenary after a long and illustrious life of service: mourned by a nation, saluted by world leaders, loved by people who knew him, celebrated for his political incorrectness.
Rapper DMX died at age 50, in a hospital from a drug overdose, with fans dancing to his music outside: after a life of drug abuse, brushes with the law, personal demons and public controversy.
Both had rough and tumultuous starts to their lives; both made difficult choices; both were worshipped (in the case of the Duke, formally by the Vanuatu islanders); both were role models; and both leave a confused and contradictory mythology.
While one is a symbol of a bygone age (an age that many people would like to consign to the dustbin of history), the other is a symbol of a generation of discontent (a layer of society that many people would prefer to ignore). Each spoke to a large number of followers from opposite ends of the scale, and each will have their legacy examined and pigeonholed.
It is, actually, rather wonderful that our world can accommodate and admire two such different people, for such different reasons, and in such different ways. I wonder what they would have made of each other if they had ever met - I suspect they would have got on famously.
For the rest, there is just our usual collection of the different, the unusual and the entertaining. Enjoy.

What is it about a flashy car and its driver? We have Henry Ford to thank for mass producing the motorcar, which empowered people and became useful to us. Now there are just too many, adding to greenhouse gas emissions. Hopefully not for long.
But for many the car equals status; a symbol of wealth and power. That's fine. But many of these obnoxious fools drive like hell, and park where they want. Confront them at your peril: they become abusive and threatening.

FREE ADVICE FOR MATURE LONG DISTANCE RUNNERS

By Blake Wilkins A quote that cannot be attributed to Mark Twain states that if he felt the need to exercise, he lay down until the feeling went away.
