Friday is Heritage Day. It used to be Shaka Day, to commemorate the date of death of the warrior who united the Zulu tribes into a single nation, and in 1995, under pressure from the Zulu nation, it was adopted as a national holiday and transformed into a unifying day of mutual respect and celebration.
It has largely been renamed as Braai Day because a braai is the one South African custom that has the same name in all of our 11 official languages. People are encouraged to braai on Heritage Day, whether they will be throwing meat or veggie burgers on the flames. It is also the day when people dress up in their colourful traditional costumes, celebrate their traditional cultures, enjoy each other's traditional ceremonies.
Heritage Day is a nice holiday. It is an excuse for us all to remember our common humanity while celebrating our cultural diversity. It reminds us that, despite our daily kvetching, we are really all privileged to live in one of the most diverse and multi-cultural countries on earth.

Speaking of diversity, that is the Chronicle's middle name. We have our usual diverse offerings, from the sublime to the ridiculous. Enjoy.

Hobbyist challenge - acrylic paint pouring 101
Heads up on acrylic paint pouring Look, I’m not going to pretend that I’d heard of acrylic paint pouring as a hobby or career before Praths raised the subject over coffee at Newport Deli. The technique segued into the conversation when my daughter Vicci and Praths were deep in a self-congratulatory exchange over the fact that they both had metal-encased …

Nomads of the Kalahari and the Namib Desert - The Khoisan People
I love and greatly respect the Khoisan people of the Kalahari Desert in Namibia and Botswana, and those spread across the Western, southern, and Eastern Cape of South Africa. They live nomadic lives, but not randomly nomadic. Each clan has a set nomadic pattern, which is repeated each year, whereby they live in pre-chosen areas specifically dedicated to each season …
