Safrea Chronicle
Message from the Editor:

This last weekend we discovered we now live in a combination of Wonderland and Oz, when a fugitive from justice, an habitual liar and manipulator, a thief and a crook, was able to muster a large gathering of supporters outside his home, where they indulged in what can only be called violent, illegal and anti-social behaviour, all the while telling the world that everyone else is at fault. Nothing unusual there, except that thousands of people actually believe it. and not only believe it, but declare they are ready to die for this belief.

If Jacob Zuma is able to get away with this, then there is nothing stopping a gangster or drug dealer or murderer from using the same tactics to subvert the law.

In Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist it was Mr Bumble who declared 'The law is an ass', meaning that the catch-all nature of law creates some ridiculous scenarios. The law might be an ass, but it is the only one we've got. And when someone makes an ass of the law, they make an ass of all of us.

This is going to be an interesting week. And here we have an interesting Chronicle, hopefully just as arbitrary, contradictory, eclectic and thought-provoking as always. Enjoy.

Off The Record - My Amazing MTN Story - Episode 11

Author: Niki Moore

Sorry for the break in transmission: we were sideswiped by the news this last week that a Senior Manager at eThekwini Municipality, Claire I-Never-Met-a-Cell-Mast-Application-I-Didn’t-Like Norton, APPROVED the MTN cell masts. When we enquired how she had managed to overlook some fairly crucial flaws, we discovered that she had joined the Jacqui O’Sullivan School of Advanced Lying (with Head of Department Vincent Ngubane and Councilor Fawzia Peer as proud alumni). She referred vaguely to some ‘Agreement’, but when we asked – as we have been doing for the last four years – to see this ‘Agreement’, we got the stone wall once again. This is a developing story, as they say, but in the meantime we will have to go back and continue our story from 2017 …
