It is hard to ignore daily events, even when this newsletter is supposedly about other things. But when the prevailing news is about pervasive civil lawlessness and journalists being attacked and robbed, it hits close to home. It is complicated enough being a journalist in South Africa nowadays without having to work in fear of your life. One can only hope that this is a short-lived spasm of opportunistic violence and that it is not, along with our pandemic, here to stay. We will need all our resilience in the days to come.

And so it is difficult, with the current fear stalking us, to be lighthearted about anything. But we are going ahead anyway. With our only hope for the C-word to be rapid immunisation, here is some food for thought:
