Message from the Editor:
Sometimes you simply need a break.
Forget elections, forget lockdown, forget the slow and strange journey back to some kind of ordinary life. And just immerse yourself in a movie that is so joyously silly that a smile will linger for quite a while.
The Eurovision Song Contest is 65 years old, and for viewers who are used to the slick, brutal and high-gloss world of Idols, Got Talent and the like, it seems a strange and bizarre mixture of high camp and low formulation. Very few Eurovision winners ever go on to become world stars (with the perennial exception of Abba, who won with 'Waterloo' in 1974), and in many ways it is such a parody of itself that it seems to be crying out to be made into a comedy.
Well, your wish has been granted.
Will Ferrel has made a flick called 'Eurovision Song Contest - the Story of Fire Saga', which is a rather predictable and backhanded homage to this immortal event. Some of the jokes are vintage Ferrel (which means they are borderline puerile) but mostly the film is so happily slight, so brimming with glee, that it is impossible not to chortle along.
American actors play Islandic song contestants; Eurovision contestants play themselves; Pierce Brosnan plays a grizzled curmudgeon; stereotype is piled on stereotype - what's not to like? Especially as Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey) plays a ravishing Russian rock star with such ostentatious aplomb that he runs away with every scene.
It's on Netflix.
I'll bring the popcorn.
Spoiler alert: you will find yourself Googling various permutations of 'Eurovison Song Contest factoids' afterwards
In the meantime, here comes the Chronicle with another weekly dose of eclectic articles.
Enjoy.
