With all the brou-ha-ha over the Megan-and-Harry interview, newspapers in the UK are full of the 'Embarrassment to the Crown' and the impending 'Fall of the Monarchy'. I suppose editors have to fill space with click-bait headlines, but really - this has happened before and will happen again, and British life will go on, pretty much unchanged. The royal dirty laundry is only noteworthy because the family itself is so famous... and if these allegations are the very worst that a disgruntled ex-royal can throw at them, then they are nowhere near a dysfunctional family.

What has become clear is that Prince Charles is a convenient target for ridicule and approbation, and one wonders what a sensitive and deeply private man ever did to earn the world's disdain (apart, perhaps, from becoming irritated with a manipulative air-head of a wife).

It is easy to dismiss the British monarchy as outmoded, archaic and irrelevant, forgetting that it sits atop a pile of British institutions that still pack a powerful punch. It is the British that invented finance, policing, parliamentary processes, sports codes, the modern military, the internet... the list is too long. And of course, English, the lingua franca, with all its power and its glory. Just in case you need a reminder of the power of words, and the particular British take on that power (and a rather nice nod to Prince Charles), here is a clip that is spine-tingling in its progress from the ridiculous to the sublime. Somewhat like the British themselves.

And speaking of English, that is the main language of our Chronicle contributors, even if we live in a multi-lingual country. Enjoy.

Back to the Future - ‘Ouma Rusks’
Over the coming weeks, I’d like to take you with me on regular trips down dusty farm roads and into post war imaginings, to times in history when regular people had brilliant ideas, and without knowing much about theoretical marketing, production, access to markets and advertising, as entrepreneurs are familiar with today - they ploughed through regardless and took their products to market, establishing brands that have stood the test of time.

By Sam J Basch: An early traveller from England described the town of Graaff-Reinet as consisting of "a few mud huts and miserable hovels." Today visitors from around the world, many opting for the award-winning historic Drostdy Hotel, come to admire its architecture and art galleries, museums and food. And to visit the nearby Camdeboo National Park, a great feature of which is the Valley of Desolation with imposing age-old rock formations dating back 150 million years towering above the expansive valley floor.

THE LOST HOARD – KRUGER REVISITED
By Blake Wilkins It was with a sense of deja vu that I read a brief BBC article revealing that a hoard of Kruger gold coins had been found in Holland around the time of the Second World War and deposited in a Swiss vault ‘for safekeeping’. A day or two later the SA Mint released a statement under a …

Creative writing is rewarding and it can even be classed as therapeutic, as are most forms of artistic expression. And, as is common to most art forms, the lack of motivation and inspiration leaves the artist stone cold, like writer's block. So when one feels the urge to write, it is best to do so without hesitation; obeying the urge. …

Written by Niki Moore...
In which our intrepid heroine introduces you to her story, and begs your indulgence to unfold a long tale, which – if everything works out – will cause the stars to start in their tracks, and your knotted and combined locks to stand on end like the fretful porpoise, as Shakespeare so eloquently put it.
