This week marks the sinking of two things: the Titanic that went down in 1912 and Yahoo Answers that will disappear in May 2021. So much is known about the Titanic that it is not necessary to describe it here, but Yahoo Answers - a Q&A portal that was as well-intentioned as that fated ship - is perhaps not so well known.

In the early days of the Internet it was felt that a market-place of ideas would allow people to ask anything they felt like behind the anonymity of the web. It will never be known how many of the questions were genuine and how many were invented by people with too much time on their hands. but it provided 16 years of head-scratching entertainment. These two entities have strange similarities. Both were conceived as a technological breakthrough - the wonder of the age; both were scuppered by unforeseen consequences; both went down under the weight of expectations; and both have enduring legends.
