Message from the Editor:

A few days after 'hard lockdown' ended, I caught a cold. This was still, by the way, during the hyper-cautionary time, when there was compulsory social distancing, sanitising and mask-wearing. I must have caught the cold on my first foray to the shopping centre.
Fortunately it was just a cold, and I was so soaked in immune-boosters that it was not even a bad one. But it made me wonder what the point was of all the anti-COVID measures, if a mere cold germ could sneak past all the medical guardrails.
What is history going to make of our year of COVID hysteria, that kicked all other social, economic and medical issues into touch? Will it be the same as that other famous bug - the Millennium Bug: the predicted computer crash that would reset the whole world back to 1900 on the stroke of midnight Dec 31 1999? According to doomsayers, governments would crash, airplanes would fall out the sky, all computer records would evaporate. In the event, nothing happened and people sheepishly woke up on Jan 1, hungover perhaps but otherwise exactly the same. And no-one ever referred again to the amount of money that was spent, the measures that were taken, the panic that was sown, the lives that were ruined.
Hindsight, as they say, is 20/20 vision. Perhaps we will look back on the ironically-named year 2020 and muse on the mass hysteria that needlessly shuttered the entire world. Or history will name it as a year where mankind narrowly escaped being wiped out.
Whatever the verdict, you still need to get your information fix - as wide and varied as possible. That is what makes life - both pre- and post-COVID worth living. And here at the Chronicle we do our best to present a wide range of ideas and insights. Enjoy!

"South African women, you're on your own!"

The ANC in Mpumalanga pulled a shocker earlier in the week when they reinstated a member accused of the rape of his two daughters to a top provincial position. They have since reversed the decision - but only due to a public outcry. Now is not the time to start pulling the "innocent until proven guilty" card. The man is facing serious charges. Charges he's faced before. What a slap in the face as we sit here observing 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, listening to speeches that mean nothing at all when our leaders don't walk the talk.

The Execution

In the National Gallery in London, a large painting by renowned artist Édouard Manet showing 'The Execution of Emperor Maximillian of Mexico', is evidently cut – in four pieces to be exact.
In his lifetime, it could not be displayed in France. He intended the artwork as a political statement against the French emperor, Napoleon III. In time, what remained of the painting, was cut into four canvasses, with other bits still missing.
