At the beginning of every year a number of literary and musical works enter the public domain, when their copyright expires. This year, The Great Gatsby - that scourge of matric pupils everywhere - becomes public property. This means that anyone can do anything they like with the work, without asking any permission or paying any royalties. So look forward to Jay Gatsby on Rollerskates, or Daisy Does Dallas.

Copyright is a strange thing.
Different countries have different copyright laws, so they lapse at different times. A copyright can be held in an estate, and can be renewed almost indefinitely. A work that is derived from an uncopyrighted work generates its own copyright, so the copy is not copy-able, if you follow my drift.
The copyright-free status of Shakespeare, Dickens, Conan Doyle, Jane Austen and some Agatha Christies means that much merry mangling can be made of their wonderful stories. Disney bought the copyright to Winnie the Pooh from AA Milne, and will make sure they renew it to eternity. On top of that, every Disney remake of classic works is also tangled up in complicated rights. And the might of Disney has made sure that Mickey Mouse and Donald will also be copyrighted until the end of time.
On the one hand, there is an argument for copyright (apart from paying royalties to perhaps-undeserving descendants) that will keep a work true to the author's purpose. On the other hand, must creative mayhem has been performed on classic works. Sherlock Holmes and Elizabeth Bennet seem to have suffered the most (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, anyone?) but some very fine works have been derived from someone else's ideas.
Our Chronicle has no such problems, even if the copyrights to the articles remain firmly with our writers. But there is no copyright on entertainment, so enjoy!

Saffron is known as the most expensive spice on earth, and you need to ensure you're buying the genuine stuff. A little goes a long way with saffron, so don't baulk at the price and don't be too heavy handed in its application either.

A SCRIBE TAKES TIME BEHIND THE LENS
In the last few years, I’ve written a range of feature articles covering the development of the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. Those pieces demanded a particular focus to meet the discerning requirements of readers in specialist disciplines such as construction, civil engineering, and facilities and environmental management. The photographs I took were highly project-specific. I’d even tramped the quays …

This Beautiful Life Gone Wrong
How will life be one day when you’re old?
This poem covers the reality of the utter nullification of what began as a beautiful life here on planet earth for me and for many of us. It is so strange how life changes, values change, even religions change over a lifetime.
Many stories of your life untold,
Memories of joy and others of grief,
And heartaches suffered beyond belief.
