Books do affect our lives. They affect how we think and how we perceive the world. They transport us to wondrous places and adventures in our minds. Then, occasionally one book, or a Bit of a Book, changes our lives. Here’s one that did it for me.

HEARTH AND HOME

Stone houses may look harsh and uninviting. Yet, they date back millenia – home to our early ancestors.

The ‘hearth’ inside was where they cooked; the fire generated heat for warmth, especially in cold climes. In time, the phrase ‘hearth and home’ came to embody family and the love shared among those living in the glow of the firelit room. It exuded coziness and the embracing comfort of home.

The sick treatment of mental health patients

The Gauteng Health Department’s notoriety with poor healthcare for people will psychiatric problems knows no bounds. The Life Esidimeni tragedy is still on the minds of many, abd conditions have still not improved in government institutions in the province. Mentally ill patients are getting raped in institutions, and there seems to be no will to address the situation. One wonders how many more of these cases are going unreported.
