Lectures, punishment, fetching leaves, pushups, Bisley marksmanship, arseholes, and insanity. It was all there.
There were options in the apartheid army. One could become a paratrooper, a pilot or remain in the infantry as cannon-fodder and die.
Which are you? Which words do you use to describe yourself? Which choice have you made?
Balloted into the army could be fun. Religion. politics and soccer were banned. But …
You might cry. I hope that you’ll laugh. Forced into military service kids found the 1960s apartheid army a cesspool of craziness & fun.
Hindsight is 20/20. Perfect vision. In future “It was 2020” will be used for all things bad. “How was your day?” won’t be ‘crappy’ but “It was 2020” or “It was BLOODY 2020!”
